Sports Tracker joins Amer Sports

Dear Sports Trackers around the world. We have some exciting news to share. We will be joining Amer Sports, the sporting goods company with internationally recognized brands including Salomon, Wilson, Arc’teryx, Mavic, Suunto and Precor.

We couldn’t be happier with this arrangement as it brings us endless possibilities to develop our service and products into a whole new level. We truly believe that we have only scratched the surface and have so much more to offer our users.

How it all started

We started Sports Tracker back in 2004 while working at Nokia Research Center at a time with no smartphones as we know them today. Our application was the first of its kind for mobile phones, so we can safely say that we were the category founders in our field. Our original vision was to come up with an easy and fun training app that would help people to train better and connect with each other.

In 2009, Sports Tracking Technologies was founded as a spin-off from Nokia. Today, after some 25 million downloads globally, we are more than 2 million monthly active trackers from more than 200 countries around the world and with over 2 billion kilometers tracked – comparable to the distance between the sun and planet Saturn!. So a Big thank you to all of you for being part of our massively active community!

We’re proud of what we’ve done during the past years, being just a small group of sports enthusiasts and mobile geeks, but we’re super excited about the possibilities this new arrangement brings us as we will be able to do so much more and much faster.

What’s next

We will continue to develop our service and products under our own brand and there will be no major changes to our service at this point. You can continue to use Sports Tracker just like before.

The new arrangement enables a more efficient, faster and versatile development of the service offering and gives us the possibility to expand our service into new sports and user situations. Being part of Amer Sports gives us also the opportunity to broaden our product portfolio and to add support to a wider range of products.

We hope you are as excited as we are with the new possibilities this acquisition brings. Our minds are already bubbling with ideas, so we can’t wait to see what lies ahead for us all. Thank you for being such an amazing community and like always, keep us busy with your feedback.

  1. David

I love your windows phone app. Please add support for Suunto’s BT HR belt, it would be a great addition.

  2. Trian

Please make something for sync to ather applications , or export all workouts (.gpx) to dropbox . I have many friends in ather applications like runnkeeper endomondo and athers and they can put all here workouts in all applicasion or drobpox they using or ather methonds , only sports-tracker need to do one by one export (.gpx) and import in someone else and then sync with all other.

  3. ZH

Sounds like good news. I have a question for you: Why can’t I remove friends on ST app (IOS version)? Thanks.

  4. Andrei

Any chance in the future to support synchronization with other services, for example support for Tapiriik or batch import from Dropbox or Garmin Connect? Would be nice to sync my data also to your system, as I have quite many friends using it.

  5. frei

You home website could`t open up in China. Just stuck in some page when you open it every times.

  6. Jörg

    Great News.
May be there will be some further development (which is very necessary).
I have been using ST for many years (using Nokia E50 together with a bluetooth-paired GPS unit). Nowadays I am using a Garmin Edge unit (because of the much longer battery life), but still upload to SportsTracker because I have some friends here. And here comes the problem: it’s impossible to pair with one particular friend. A solution has been promised years ago, but nothing happened. May be a general overhaul of the service is possible now…
It would be also highly appreciated to update the Symbian app to include all the features the iOS and Android users have. I am a die-hard Nokia 808 owner :-)
    Greetings from Thuringia, Germany

  7. Rol Sax

I have been using this app for quite some time, and had hoped you would finally add support for HRMs as written in last summers blog. Unfortunately, this is still not available, forcing me to buy your HRM, or use a different app. Disappointed, makes me think “money grab”. My H7 works great with other apps, so it can’t be a problem to get it to work with Sports Tracker.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Rol Sax, do you have an Android phone? If yes, we’ve now opened our app for other Smart belts as well.

      1. Rol Sax

        And so it works! Cheers.

      2. robert

which one .have polar for nokia and poalar nokia (no smart.)

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

We added the Smart support. The old Polar Wearlink with Bluetooth should also work, but there are some issues with some Android phones (not related to our app, you can google it). It might be also that your monitor is so old that it simply doesn’t work anymore.

  8. Pete

Great news that you are starting to work with Amer Sports!! Hopefully this brings some resources and finance support to you. I’m just about to buy Suunto Ambit 3 and I was thinking if there is a possibility to sync training data to Sports Tracker. It would be also great if you can use Sports Tracker as “primary” application and copy/export the same data to other training data services i.e. movescount, Heiaheia! etc. Some of my friends still hasn’t found Sports Tracker whom I’d like to share my workouts

  9. bowmore

Good news. Been using both Sports Tracker and Movescount (with Suunto Ambit). The latter has some good features but a terrible web implementation. Maybe we have something better one day…

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi bowmore, thanks for the feedback. What are the good features you like in Movescount that we don’t have?

  10. lifebike

That’s great news. Hopefully your team will now have more resources for updating the Windows Phone app and bringing it on par with the Android and iOS versions of the app.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi lifebike, let’s see what can be done about that:)

  11. Manav

Hope, now you people positively think of adding Pebble support/app as well.
Also, Step-Counter/Cadence features would be a great immediate addition to ST.

    All the best again!!

  12. David

Great news that you now have some heavy backing. Currently the Suunto movescount app only supports IOS and Droid. Please don’t drop that wonderfull windows phone app.

  13. John McCabe

I’m very pleased that you’re going to, hopefully, get the financial backing to help you get back to the forefront of the industry. I started using Sports Tracker on my Nokia 5800 and it was way ahead of the competition but, since then, the lack of proper investment has seen the app and website fall behind. I still recommend ST to friends but have also mentioned some of the issues that have happened recently, in particular the maps going AWOL on the website because you hadn’t updated the Google APIs. Now, with Amer Sports backing, I hope that all the nice features I’d like to see (e.g. sync with Garmin Connect on the website, support for ANT+ on the Android app) will come to fruition.

    Good luck

    1. David

Same situation here. I even bought the heart rate monitor to use it with my 5800.

I’ve moved to Android since then, but I found surprisingly that the business model changed to a subscription based model. As a OpenStreetMap contributor I’m disappointed that you can’t even use OpenStreetMap unless you subscribe. :(
And the website continues to (ab)use Flash…

      Not happy at all.

      1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi David, thanks for your feedback. Our website doesn’t use flash anymore since last year when we launched the new html5 based site. Sorry to hear you’re not happy with the map situation, let’s see if there’s something we can do about it going forward.

        1. David

You’re right about the Flash thing. I should eat my words. Sorry. It’s been a lot of time since I used the website.

        2. paulo106

Me to. As a OpenStreetMap contributor i don’t understand why the application sportstracker using the free map is premium while the company is using the resources we have worked free for openstreetmap.

  14. Zbiniek

Mam nadzieję, że wersja darmowa nie będzie “okrojona” o kolejne funkcje.

Przy okazji: kiedy będzie polska wersja językowa?

    Pozdrawiam i życzę dalszych sukcesów

    1. Maciej

  15. Christophe Bergiers

I have followed you and use sport tracker for years now and am very happy to see that the new agreement includes Suunto. I would love for my Suunto Ambit 2 and your services to sync without requiring an export of a gpx from another service to be re-imported in to your services. There is already such a synchronisation between Movecount from Suunto and Strava.

  16. Richard A.

I first started using your app when it was on the Nokia N95 8gb. I have followed you for years now and am very happy to see that the new agreement includes Suunto. I would love for my Suunto Ambit 3 and your services to sync without requiring an export of a gpx from another service to be re-imported in to your services.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Richard, thanks for the feedback. Let’s see what we can do about adding the support.

      1. Mikko

My vote for Movescount to ST also :)

  17. Ricardo Cardoso

    Parabéns !!!
agora poderia voltar a imagem dos treinos pelo mapa da Google Terra no site do Sports Tracker. Ou pela OpenStreetMap, MapQuest mas, com opção para terra.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks Ricardo Cardoso, let’s see what can be done with that.

  18. Vadim Nikitin

Amer Sports is very powerful and reasonable company. It’s a big proud to be in one family with such brands as Atomic, Salomon, Mavic, etc…

I can’t even imagine new opportunities for Sports Tracker and to all users of application!

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks Vadim Nikitin! We’re very excited as well:)

  19. Lawrie

When is your apple watch app due out?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Laurie, more news on that to follow.

[…] Read the full press release here. […]

  21. Charles Morgan

Will you be able to help Suunto develop an Android App for use with the Ambit series of watches? And will we be able to import/export workout data from SportsTracker to MovesCount?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Charles, thanks for the feedback. The idea is to give and get help both ways, but we’ll have to wait and see for more details.

  22. Trurl

Any change that this will lead to open positions in Tampere office?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

We don’t know yet what happens, but we’ll definitely let you know if this is the case.

  23. long time user

Good luck! Hope this means native SailfishOS support is coming!

Also development of group-related activities is a huge potential imho… of course it’s nice to compare to oneself, but it can be so much more fun with friends :)

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks long time user! Let’s see what the future brings, agree on the group potential:)

  24. Manav

Why didn’t your minds bubble before?
First thing you should do is make it stable and bug free!!
I mean how come this app auto pause when one is moving at 20 kmph speed? This happened with the yesterday only. Lost about 10 km of tracking while cycling, till I realized why its not buzzing!!!

    Anyways, best wishes!!
I love this app so I want it to be the best.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Manav, of course our minds were bubbling of ideas before as well, but now we’re getting the resources to actually make them happen:). Please check that you have the latest version of the app, as that bug should have been fixed already. Cheers!

  25. Rupen

Good stuff, hopefully this will help evolve into the undisputed leader.

    Good luck!

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

      Thanks Rupen!

  26. Lloyd

This is probably a good move… the fitness tracking market is dramatically changing at the moment. Smart wearable devices, decentralised data storage (e.g. MS Health) and new tracking technologies mean now is the time to innovate again.

Looking forward to seeing you reach new heights!

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Cheers Lloyd! We’re super excited and agree that it’s time to act:)!

  27. Chris

    Will there be Pebble support?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hey Chris, thanks for the comment. We’ll have to wait and see for the next moves regarding wearables.
